GULL MEW vs SUPER MEW: Differences and Which to Choose
GULL MEW vs SUPER MEW fins: rubber, foot pocket, sizes and weights as GULL states them, who each suits, and where SUPER MEW XX, MEW CYPHER and other MEWs fit.
GULL MEW and SUPER MEW are both full-foot fins with similar names and similar looks, but GULL built them for different divers. The short answer: GULL calls MEW easy to use from beginners to veterans, you can wear it barefoot, and it works for skin diving and scuba. SUPER MEW is the MEW that GULL developed further into a scuba fin, with three rubbers in one fin and a size table for boots only.
This guide compares the two as GULL describes them on its official English and Japanese sites, then shows where the 6 other MEW models we sell fit in. Prices are the prices on our site when this guide was written; the product page always has the latest.

GULL MEW: a first fin for skin diving and scuba
GULL launched MEW in 1984 as its flagship full-foot fin, and its official page still carries a "NO.1 SALES" label, according to GULL.
- A soft pocket that slips on and off: thin, pliant rubber, so even on your first full-foot fin you get in and out with little effort.
- Ribs built for the down kick: the part of the stroke where leg power turns into drive most easily. GULL says they answer strong and gentle kicks, so power divers and occasional divers both get on with them.
- A rounded tip: it holds the water from the start to the end of every kick, right to the tip.
- Bare feet or boots: wear it barefoot, or with GULL Mew Boots, Short Mew Boots or Skin Hot Boots.
GULL SUPER MEW: the MEW developed for scuba
GULL's Japanese page calls SUPER MEW a scuba fin developed from MEW, and the English page recommends it for divers who want power that matches their kick, 1:1.
- Hybrid rubber, three stiffnesses: soft rubber in the pocket, the hardest rubber in the ribs, and a slightly softer stiff rubber in the blade.
- Midsize blade, ribs on both faces: GULL says the blade responds instantly, and making the ribs the same height on the top and bottom of the blade improves rebound.
- 3D pocket: the opening hugs your Achilles tendon to reduce looseness, and GULL shaped it around Mew Boots. The soft heel flips down so your boot slides in easily.
- Grip: the same wraparound tread as GULL BARRACUDA helps on wet boat decks and rocky entries.
GULL does not describe SUPER MEW as a beginner fin. If you're just starting, MEW is the one GULL calls easy to use from beginners to veterans.
MEW and SUPER MEW size chart and weight
All numbers come from the tables on GULL's pages. Weight is per fin, measured on black.
GULL MEW (size chart on GULL's page)
| Size | Barefoot | Mew Boots / Short Mew Boots | Weight | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 22–23 cm | - | 690 g | 515 mm |
| S | 23–24 cm | 22–23 cm | 705 g | 520 mm |
| MS | 24–25 cm | 23–24 cm | 740 g | 540 mm |
| M | 25–26 cm | 24–25 cm | 750 g | 550 mm |
| L | 27–28 cm | 25–26 cm | 850 g | 580 mm |
| XL | 28–29 cm | 27–28 cm | 1,025 g | 620 mm |
GULL SUPER MEW (size chart on GULL's page)
| Size | Mew Boots / Short Mew Boots | 5 mm Mew Boots | Weight | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 22 cm | - | 910 g | 565 mm |
| S | 23–24 cm | 22 cm | 930 g | 580 mm |
| M | 24–25 cm | 23–24 cm | 1,045 g | 600 mm |
| L | 25–26 cm | 24–25 cm | 1,060 g | 615 mm |
| XL | 26–27 cm | 25–26 cm | 1,200 g | 650 mm |
The same size letter doesn't mean the same foot. In 27–28 cm Mew Boots, for example, MEW is an XL, but SUPER MEW's table stops at XL for 26–27 cm. Always read the column for what you will actually wear. The other boot columns (5 mm Mew Boots for MEW, and Skin Hot Boots) are on each product page.
GULL says the size table is a guide only and fit depends on the shape of your feet. Between sizes? Ask us on LINE. You can exchange sizes within 7 days (subject to stock) if the fins are unused, have not been in the water and still have their tags and packaging; you pay shipping both ways unless we sent the wrong item or it is faulty.
