GULL VADER vs LUVOS: Which Mask Is Right for You?

GULL VADER and GULL LUVOS are both single-lens dive masks from GULL, and divers often weigh one against the other. The short answer: VADER is GULL's flagship single-lens mask, lower in volume, with an amber UV420 AR lens or a Super Clear lens, and a smaller version, VADER fanette, for smaller faces. LUVOS is GULL's all-new wide single-lens mask with a clear UV380 AR IR lens, and GULL says it has the widest view of any single-lens mask GULL has made.

Lens and view

All three are single-lens masks.

• VADER: GULL says that with no centre frame splitting the lens, what your left and right eyes see overlaps into one bright, broad view. The lens sits close to your eyes, and a 10° lens tilt keeps your view down to chest level, where most diving tasks happen.
• VADER fanette: the same single-lens form in a smaller body, with a 9.5° lens tilt for the view down to chest level. Its view is a little narrower than VADER's: 94° × 108°.
• LUVOS: GULL says its 105° vertical view is the largest of any GULL mask, and with 118° horizontally it is the widest-view single-lens mask GULL has made, rivalling frameless masks. It also has a 10° lens tilt.

If a wide view comes first for you, LUVOS is the one GULL built for it.

Volume and clearing

Volume is the air space inside the mask. VADER fanette is the lowest of the three at 125cc, then VADER at 140cc, then LUVOS at 170cc.

GULL says the low volume of VADER fanette makes it easier to exhale into the mask to equalise it and to clear water. On LUVOS, GULL says the reworked nose pocket makes equalising more likely to succeed. All three have a drain skirt that helps push water out when you clear the mask.

Lens coatings

• Amber UV420 CUT AR (VADER and VADER fanette, coloured frames): GULL says it blocks UV and high-energy visible (HEV) light up to 420 nm, and the amber tint raises contrast underwater. The anti-reflective (AR) coating lets about 95% of light through, against about 92% for a conventional lens (GULL's figures). GULL notes the lens is amber but its reflective coating makes it look blue in photos.
• Super Clear (VADER and VADER fanette, Clear model): glass refined by GULL to let the most light through, with fewer skirt reflections on the lens.
• Clear UV380 CUT AR IR (LUVOS): AR-coated on both sides, which GULL says makes it clearer than UV420 lenses, plus an infrared-cut coating that blocks roughly 50% of infrared rays to help protect the skin around your eyes in strong sun on the beach or the water surface.

LUVOS comes with the clear lens only. If you want the amber, contrast-boosting lens, choose VADER or VADER fanette.

Fit: which one seals on your face

Fit matters more than any number here. Each mask uses a different skirt design.

• VADER: the skirt and strap clip are one piece, with a curled lip that GULL says seals without leaving much of a mark, and soft dampers that ease pressure on the cheekbones.
• VADER fanette: GULL says divers with smaller faces may find VADER slightly large, so fanette is smaller overall. Its Leakless System wraps the skirt from outside the cheekbones and is shaped to hold the seal when your face moves, for example when you fit a regulator or smile underwater.
• LUVOS: GULL's Comfort Fit Technology adds reinforced dampers against flooding at the lips, a 3D Leak Guard that seals along the laugh lines when you clench a snorkel or regulator, and a nose pocket that is easy to pinch, even in thick gloves.

All three use GULL's DX Spec buckle, which GULL says you can adjust one-handed, even in thick gloves.

Counted from the colour lists on GULL's English pages:

• VADER: 13 options: 11 frame colours on black silicone, Matte Glass White on white silicone, and Clear.
• VADER fanette: 11 options: 4 on black silicone, 6 on white silicone, and Clear.
• LUVOS: 10 options: 6 on black silicone, 3 on white silicone, and Clear.

Prescription lenses

GULL offers order-made prescription lenses for short or long sight for a wide range of its masks, and shows VADER among its examples. GULL says an order can't be cancelled or changed once received, and finished lenses can't be exchanged. GULL's page doesn't name VADER fanette or LUVOS, so ask us on LINE before you order and tell us your prescription.

• GULL LUVOS G-Metal · ฿19,900: the LUVOS view, 170cc volume and clear UV380 AR IR lens in an anodised aluminium frame. It weighs 308 g, comes in black silicone only, in Onyx, Crimson or Majestic Gold, with GULL's ballistic-nylon case. GULL made 1,000 worldwide, about 300 per colour, and calls it the world's only wide-view single-lens mask with a metal frame (according to GULL).

Which one should you choose?

• You want a bright, broad view and a lower-volume mask: GULL VADER.
• You want the amber, contrast-boosting lens: GULL VADER or VADER fanette.
• VADER feels slightly large on your face, or you want the lowest volume of the three: GULL VADER fanette.
• A wide view comes first, and you prefer a clear lens: GULL LUVOS.
• You are often out in strong sun on beaches or the water surface: GULL LUVOS, with its infrared-cut coating.
• You want the LUVOS view in a metal frame, as a limited piece: GULL LUVOS G-Metal.

GULL VADER or LUVOS: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. VADER is lower in volume (140cc) and offers the amber UV420 AR lens. LUVOS has the wider view (105° × 118°) and a clear UV380 AR IR lens. Choose the one that seals on your face and gives the view you want.

Which has the wider view, VADER or LUVOS?

LUVOS. GULL gives 105° vertical and 118° horizontal for LUVOS, and its catalogue gives 100° and 113° for VADER.

Is there a LUVOS with a UV420 amber lens?

GULL lists LUVOS with the clear UV380 CUT AR IR lens only. For an amber UV420 CUT AR lens, look at VADER or VADER fanette.
