MANTIS 5

The fifth MANTIS: 12% less volume, a wider view

MANTIS first came out in 1972, and GULL has refined it over five generations. MANTIS 5 keeps the simple, retro look but brings the lenses closer to your eyes: inner volume drops by about 12% to 177cc, so your view widens, reaches down to chest level, and mask clearing gets easier, according to GULL. Every colour has Super Clear glass. GULL calls it the mask that set a new standard for scuba diving masks.

Highlights

12% less volume, a wider view

GULL moved the lenses closer to your eyes than on the MANTIS, cutting inner volume by about 12% (177cc against 202cc). Your overall view widens and reaches down to chest level, where most diving tasks happen, and GULL says mask clearing gets easier.

Super Clear lenses

Glass with the impurities taken out is clearer than standard glass, so you see objects underwater more clearly and more truly. On clear silicone masks it also keeps the skirt from reflecting in the lens.

Curled-lip skirt with built-in strap clip

The curled lip seals well without leaving much of a mark. The strap clip sits on the skirt, so the strap's pull draws the mask edge against your face for a more natural feel than a frame-mounted strap. Soft dampers ease pressure on the cheekbones, and the drain skirt pushes water out when you clear the mask.

Takes the DX Spec buckle

GULL lists MANTIS 5 as taking the DX Spec buckle. Its release button and fine-pitch strap let you adjust while wearing the mask, one-handed, even in thick gloves.

FAQ

How is it different from the MANTIS?

Figures from GULL: MANTIS 5 is 225 g and 177cc; MANTIS is 233 g and 202cc. About 12% less inner volume widens the overall view.

Is it OK for beginners?

GULL names no skill level for MANTIS 5. If you are new, two things help: GULL says the lower volume makes mask clearing easier, and the drain skirt pushes water out so less of it pools inside. Not sure it suits your face? Ask us on LINE before you order.

Which colours are there?

There are 14 colours in all: 5 in silicone, 2 in white silicone, 4 in black silicone and 3 in rubber. Clear Lemon, Clear Hawaiian Blue, Ruby Red and Clear Ichigo are new. Every colour has Super Clear lenses.

Can I fit prescription lenses?

GULL makes ready-made optical lenses for MANTIS, sold per lens, and says they fit MANTIS 5. Order-made lenses are also available. Ask us on LINE before you order.
