RK3 HD

The RK3 in a higher-density rubber: stiffer and negatively buoyant

RK3 HD is made from a higher-density (HD) material than the standard RK3, which makes the fin stiffer and negatively buoyant, and Apeks calls it ideal for wetsuit diving. The rest is the RK3 that Apeks says has been standard issue for military, special ops, coast guard and public safety divers for decades: a short, wide vented blade that reduces resistance on the upstroke and adds thrust on the downstroke, an over-sized foot pocket that takes drysuit boots, and spring straps as standard.

Highlights

Higher density: stiffer, negatively buoyant

Apeks makes RK3 HD from a higher-density material than the standard RK3, so the fin is stiffer and negatively buoyant. Apeks calls it ideal for wetsuit diving.

Vents: less drag up, more thrust down

The vented blade reduces resistance on the upstroke and adds thrust on the downstroke. Apeks says the short, wide blade gives maximum forward thrust while staying very manoeuvrable, and the blade material is designed to hold up in the toughest environments, temperatures and abuse.

Spring straps, easy in gloves

Spring straps come as standard, and the improved foot pocket is easy to use with cold hands or thick gloves. A custom buckle holds the straps in the best position, and a simple push pin lets you replace a spring if you need to.

Room for drysuit boots, clips to a karabiner

The over-sized foot pocket takes drysuit boots, and two large grommet holes fit most karabiners, so the fins are easy to carry while you get to the dive site.

Who it is for

Great for
  • Wetsuit divers who want a stiffer, negatively buoyant fin
  • Cold-water divers or anyone in thick gloves: spring straps make the fins easy to put on and take off
  • Divers who are hard on their gear in harsh environments and want a rugged fin
Maybe not for
  • New divers after a first fin: Apeks builds RK3 HD for harsh environments. If you are just starting, try GULL MEW (a full-foot fin), which GULL calls easy to use at any level, or ask us on LINE
  • Divers after a fin Apeks designs specifically for frog kicks and back-finning in tight spaces: look at the RK4

Size guide

Not sure about the size?

  • Stand on paper and measure from heel to the tip of your longest toe.
  • For strap fins, go by your boot size, not your bare foot.

FAQ

How do I pick a size?

RK3 HD comes in four sizes, and Apeks deliberately gives no shoe-size range because it can mislead: the size you need depends on where you dive and the boots you wear. A size 9 wetsuit boot and a size 9 rigid dry boot take up different space in the foot pocket. Tell us your boots on LINE before you order, and you can exchange sizes within 7 days if unused and never in the water (you cover shipping both ways unless we sent the wrong item or it is faulty).

RK3 HD or RK3: what is the difference?

Both have the same short, wide vented blade, over-sized foot pocket and spring straps. RK3 HD is made from a higher-density material than the standard RK3, so it is stiffer and negatively buoyant, and Apeks calls it ideal for wetsuit diving. RK3 HD comes in 3 colours, RK3 in 5.

Wetsuit or drysuit?

Either. Apeks calls RK3 HD ideal for wetsuit diving, and the over-sized foot pocket is made to take drysuit boots too.

Is it OK for beginners?

Apeks builds RK3 HD as a rugged fin for harsh environments and does not say it is made for new divers. If you are just starting, GULL MEW, a full-foot fin, is the one GULL calls easy to use at any level. Still unsure? Ask us on LINE.

Is it hard to put on with gloves?

No. Apeks improved the foot pocket and fitted spring straps so the fins are easy to use with cold hands or thick gloves.
