RK3

The vented rubber fin issued to military and public safety divers for decades

RK3 is Apeks' rugged thermoplastic rubber fin, based on one of the first vented rubber fins sold in North America. Apeks says the design has been the standard issue fin for military, special ops, coast guard and public safety divers for decades. The short, wide blade drives you forward and stays manoeuvrable, and the vents reduce resistance on the upstroke and add thrust on the downstroke. An over-sized foot pocket takes drysuit boots, and spring straps come as standard, so the fins go on and off easily with cold hands or thick gloves.

Highlights

Vents: less drag up, more thrust down

The vented blade reduces resistance on the upstroke and adds thrust on the downstroke. Apeks says the vents also eliminate the vortexes that can form along the back of the blade, and that the short, wide blade gives maximum forward thrust while staying very manoeuvrable.

Built for harsh environments

Compact and ultra-rugged for harsh environments. Apeks designed the blade material to hold up in the toughest environments, temperatures and abuse.

Spring straps, easy in gloves

Spring straps come as standard, and the improved foot pocket is easy to use with cold hands or thick gloves. A custom buckle holds the straps in the best position, and a simple push pin lets you replace a spring if you need to.

Room for drysuit boots, clips to a karabiner

The over-sized foot pocket takes drysuit boots, and two large grommet holes fit most karabiners, so the fins are easy to carry while you get to the dive site.

Who it is for

Great for
  • Drysuit divers: the over-sized foot pocket takes drysuit boots
  • Cold-water divers or anyone in thick gloves: spring straps make the fins easy to put on and take off
  • Divers who are hard on their gear in harsh environments and want a rugged fin
Maybe not for
  • New divers after a first fin: Apeks builds RK3 for harsh environments. If you are just starting, try GULL MEW (a full-foot fin), which GULL calls easy to use at any level, or ask us on LINE
  • Wetsuit divers who want a stiffer, negatively buoyant fin: look at the RK3 HD, which Apeks calls ideal for wetsuit diving

Size guide

Not sure about the size?

  • Stand on paper and measure from heel to the tip of your longest toe.
  • For strap fins, go by your boot size, not your bare foot.

FAQ

How do I pick a size?

RK3 comes in four sizes, and Apeks deliberately gives no shoe-size range because it can mislead: the size you need depends on where you dive and the boots you wear. A size 9 wetsuit boot and a size 9 rigid dry boot take up different space in the foot pocket. Tell us your boots on LINE before you order, and you can exchange sizes within 7 days if unused and never in the water (you cover shipping both ways unless we sent the wrong item or it is faulty).

RK3 or RK3 HD: what is the difference?

Both have the same short, wide vented blade, over-sized foot pocket and spring straps. RK3 HD is made from a higher-density material than the standard RK3, so it is stiffer and negatively buoyant, and Apeks calls it ideal for wetsuit diving. RK3 comes in 5 colours, RK3 HD in 3.

RK3 or RK4: which one?

RK4 is Apeks' modern-style technical fin: one-piece rubber, stainless-steel spring straps with two settings, made for frog kicks, back-finning and tight spaces. RK3 is the classic vented design with a short, wide blade, built for harsh environments and issued to military and public safety divers for decades. Still deciding? Ask us on LINE.

Is it OK for beginners?

Apeks builds RK3 as a rugged fin for harsh environments and does not say it is made for new divers. If you are just starting, GULL MEW, a full-foot fin, is the one GULL calls easy to use at any level. Still unsure? Ask us on LINE.

Does it work with a drysuit?

Yes. Apeks made the foot pocket over-sized to take drysuit boots, and the foot pocket and spring straps are easy to use with cold hands or thick gloves.
