XL4+

Compact and light, to ease your jaw on long dives

Apeks calls the XL4+ a compact, lightweight regulator for diving in all environments, including cold water. Its design and low weight help reduce jaw fatigue on long dives, it makes an ideal stage regulator for exploration divers carrying a lot of equipment, and Apeks pitches it as a high-performance option for divers serious about saving weight. The compact machined first stage is based on Apeks' expedition-tested DS4 platform and weighs 905 g (32 oz) in DIN or 1,041 g (37 oz) in yoke.

Apeks has recalled some XL4 / XL4+ / OCEA second stages (serials 250402212 to 260402893) for inspection. We are checking our distributor's stock, so ordering this model is paused for now.

Highlights

Compact first stage on the DS4 platform

A compact machined first stage based on the DS4 platform. Its over-balanced diaphragm lets the medium pressure in the hose rise faster than ambient as you descend, which Apeks says gives superior performance at depth. It has 2 HP ports and 4 MP ports.

Guarded against ice for cold water

The over-moulded endcap and environmental diaphragm help prevent the ice build-up that can cause a first-stage free flow in extreme conditions, and protect the first stage from impacts. A large heat-exchanger diaphragm clamp helps raise the gas temperature inside the first stage. Apeks lists it as certified for cold-water use (EN250A).

Light second stage, no-bite mouthpiece

The compact, lightweight second stage improves comfort and helps reduce jaw fatigue on long dives. The Comfo-bite mouthpiece has a bridge across the upper palate, so it stays in place without bite pressure, and a reusable clip makes changing mouthpieces in the field simple.

Big purge button, easy venturi lever

A large, over-moulded purge button is self-flushing and controllable, and the ergonomic venturi lever is easy to use and find. A large heat exchanger in the second stage improves cold-water performance and freezing resistance, and the nylon braided hose, Apeks says, performs better in cold water than traditional rubber hose.

Who it is for

Great for
  • Divers who want to save weight: Apeks pitches it as a high-performance option for divers serious about it
  • Long-dive divers who want a second stage that helps reduce jaw fatigue
  • Exploration divers who need a stage regulator: Apeks calls it ideal for that
  • Divers who also dive cold water: Apeks lists it as EN250A cold-water certified
Maybe not for
  • Divers who want to adjust breathing effort mid-dive or swap the hose side: Apeks lists neither for this model, so look at the EVX200 or ask us on LINE

FAQ

XL4+ or XL4 OCEA: what is the difference?

Apeks built the XL4 OCEA from the XL4+, reconsidering every material and process: OCEA uses recycled and bio-based plastics and lead-free brass, made in a solar-powered facility. Both have an over-balanced first stage, 2 HP and 4 MP ports, EN250A cold-water certification and a Comfo-bite mouthpiece. Still deciding? Ask us on LINE.

DIN or INT: which one should I choose?

It is how the first stage connects to the tank valve, so match the valves you dive with. Apeks lists the first stage at 905 g (32 oz) in DIN and 1,041 g (37 oz) in INT (yoke). Not sure? Ask us on LINE.

Can I use it as a stage regulator?

Yes. Apeks says the XL4+ makes an ideal stage regulator for exploration divers carrying a lot of equipment.

Can I use it in cold water?

Apeks lists it as certified for cold-water use (EN250A), with the environmental dry kit as standard, an over-moulded endcap against ice build-up and heat exchangers on both the first and second stage.

How many ports does it have?

Two HP ports (7/16" UNF) and four MP ports (3/8" UNF). The hose is a braided Flexi-hose with a standard metallic connection.
